C'mon Deeyah!

Deeyah faces death threats, Why?
Because she stood up for what she thinks is RIGHT.

In her videoclip “What will it be?”, she took off a burqa (hijab+niqab+abaya) to uncover a bikini. So?!

Some believe she “desecrated” the burqa & what a burqa stands for deliberately.

That made me start wondering about “Tawba vs. Ridda” (Repentance vs. Apostasy), both within the perspective of muslims, thus, converting from islam to another religion or the other way, is not involved here.
It’s simply the endless argument: Right vs. Wrong.

Muslims typically welcome people who repent & denounce their “pre-repentance” actions & beliefs, and say “Allah hadahum” (Allah guided them [to the straight path]).
But, when a man shaves his beard or when a woman takes off her hijab, and denounce their “pre-apostasy” actions & beliefs, muslims “open the gates of hell” and say “Allah yhadahum” (May Allah guide them [to the straight path]).

What you believe in doesn’t entail being “RIGHT”.
Acceptance & toleration are neither cowardice nor indifference. They are virtues.

What offends you more?:
Miss World Pageants or Suicide Bombers?
Nude beaches or compulsory islamic clothing?
Religious Policemen or the Red Light District?

In “What will it be?”, Deeya poses a considerable question:
“Does the truth only come from the top of a holy man's spire?”

Take a deep breath & ponder steadily …

awalan, shte6la3 deeyah.. men tekoon?

now.. by her taking off the hijab/abaya/niqaab and settling for a bikini as you say,, what does that really suggest other than a hijab/abaya/niqab as "wrong" and "oppresive" and thus the right and "open" thing would be to show up in a bikini?

me and u as males cant relate, but i know for a fact that some girls consider "il sitir" as a priority .. so for them, how is this NOT offensive? even when knowing that they (these ladies) are not mintaqbaat nor yalbeson 3ebby

regardless of it being right or wrong (for example, il 3abaya wel niqab mo 'farth' o kelna nadry b hal shay) .. but we're talking about what a lot of women believe in here (as well as their men) and a singer called Deeyah suggesting that it's really 'better off if you were to show off ur body in a bikini'

again, how is this not offensive?

more to the point, u suggest:
"What you believe in doesn’t entail being “RIGHT”.
Acceptance & toleration are neither cowardice nor indifference. They are virtues."

so how is "7arakat'ha" regarded as accepting and tolerant wa maa ilaa thaalik?

- as for which offends me more -
Miss World Pageants or Suicide Bombers?
Nude beaches or compulsory islamic clothing?
Religious Policemen or the Red Light District?
-

they all offend me (althu im not sure what the red light district is?) but they all offend me because its either a matter of:
- disregarding everything my faith teaches
- disregarding the POINT in what my faith teaches

I personally believe that if the aim of Deeyah was to somehow 'liberate' muslim women through her video, i feel she could have done a much better job.

She could have tried stressing on the freedoms alotted to women through Islam that men have taken away from us.

I am getting tired of seeing women taking of their clothes and calling their disrobement an advancement of women's rights and freedom.

Promoting education among women is key, and not taking one's clothes off.

Temetwir,

I can say:
Regardless of what Temitwir, Deeyah, iDip & others think is right, It's all about how we define things as "offending".

So, here I am, a blogger voicing out his opinion, a human-being calling people to understand others & to know that whatever is right or wrong, doesn't give us the right to decide who deserves to live.

catch-22,
the video link is available in the post above. (The link in the second paragraph).

Muslim Artist,
I agree with you on education. Nevertheless, there are more things to be done regarding what some intl. organizations call "empowerment of women"

www.desitunes4u.com/Interview_Deeyah.htm
Here's an interview with here.

It says that she was singing "things 3ala ha6aga" since age of 7 and her parents are with her.

At first I thought she was an arab muslim, but it turns out she's not, her 1st spoken language is Urdu. So this situation isn't so shocking. As suppose to the Bin Laden girl gone hollywoood case.

Lastly, I just wanna say that interview and I bet her life is pretty much hyped on the racism track.
